“Transparent construction site, safe construction site: Umarell, what a passion“
SAIE exclusively launches the third edition of the photography contest on Instagram, which for the next edition will have as its theme “Transparent construction site, safe construction site: Umarell, what a passion”.
Construction sites have always been at the center of interest of citizens and cities for the impacts they have in terms of buildings, infrastructure, roads and open spaces. The citizen perceives himself as part of a process that contributes to improving his standard of living and the quality of the urban environment in which he lives. The construction site is therefore a tool for building consensus and sharing the city’s development strategy to establish trust between technicians, public administrations and operators.
Involvement can also be expressed through observation and photography, and you know…when we talk about construction sites, Umarell cannot be missing. The figure of the retired old man who spends hours observing construction sites with his hands behind his back has become a characteristic symbol of the Italian urban landscape. The presence of these attentive observers is not only a social phenomenon, but can also be interpreted as an indicator of the visibility of the construction site. A visible construction site, or a workplace where operations are transparent and open to the public, is a technique that is increasingly used to increase safety within construction sites.
The visibility of the construction site brings with it several advantages. First of all, knowing that one’s work is under the watchful eye of the Umarell (and anyone who passes by) encourages workers and those responsible for the construction site to maintain higher standards of order and safety.
The idea of being observed reduces the risk of negligent behavior and promotes greater attention to safety regulations.
This public visibility creates a sort of social control, where the community itself becomes an active part in monitoring and ensuring that the work proceeds in compliance with the rules and safety regulations.
With this photography contest, SAIE wants to enhance the theme of safety on construction sites, considering that the presence of the Umarell figure in front of a construction site is not only a nice feature of the Italian urban landscape, but also a positive sign of transparency and safety on the construction site.
